Memory Quilt in Red

Well... The other day my daughter asked me to take out the boxes with her old clothes. These days she was continuously asking about the time she was just a baby so I didn't suspected anything. After a couple of hours she came to me with half a dozen of red onesies, shirts, pants, a pair of old stockings, even a hat, and asked me to make a quilt for her sofa. I was really surprised, but how can I say no for such a kind request... Then she reminded me, that her doll also needs a new quilt. From the same red materials she brought to me. So this weekend I started to make a new memory quilt. This time a memory quilt in red.

Here are all the red fabrics for the quilt and a few of the chain pieced squares. Each square is 10 cm by 10 cm (~4 in x 4 in).

I found 3 appliqués I wanted to use, but they were a bit taller than the other squares so I made a wider row with them.

And the quilt top is ready! It was a very windy day so my DH helped me by holding the quilt. As you can see, there are a few crazy squares that I had to add to the quilt...

Mini Memory Quilt Part 2

After a few hours of piecing and quilting, my mini memory quilt is ready. I used the leftover of my memory quilt but with smaller squares. The first part of this project can be found here: Mini Memory Quilt Part 1.

Using parts of the same duvet as previously, this small quilt became very soft and fluffy. Using my regular sewing machine I sew some straight lines close to the edges so everything stays together, then finished it up by manual quilting some hearts. The quilt is so thick, that I couldn't do the usual rockning motion of the needle, I had to go up and down and up and down... It was very slow. They are just freehand hearts, and I still need to add some.

Rewatched Jenny’s great video tutorial about binding. I used machine binding for the front side then hand binding for the back of the quilt.

My daughter was very happy with this quilt and started playing with it right away. The background is my Memory quilt.

I still have a few small squares left, one day I will use them. But not today. Probably not this year...

Felt Scrap Necklace in Pink

While I was making my felt scraps necklaces, my daughter was digging in my scrap basket and found some treasure.

With some help, she made a a beautiful necklace for herself. My favourite colour is blue, pale blue to be more precise, but clearly, her colour scheme is more on the girly side.

Memory Quilt - Part 3

Last weekend I finished the piecing of my quilt. Also trimmed all threads, straightened the outer edges and added a stay-stitching around the entire edge of the quilt to keep the edges of the pieced border from pulling apart. My daughter wanted something fluffy and warm so I decided to use a comforter as a batting and omit the use of any backing since the comforter is finished already.

I have a very basic sewing machine and my quilt is very thick, so I was only able to machine quilt close to the edges, and with straight lines. Then added the binding and let my daughter to play with it. She was so happy :)

The quilting is not completely finished, but the quilt can be used. The horizontal lines seen in the photo below are coming from the original comforter.

To finish the quilting I will hand quilt some of her nicknames and lots of hearts to go with the patter of the fabrics. She has plenty of nicknames so this will take forever…

Memory Quilt Part 2

This weekend I finalized the design of my quilt. I ended up having 12 large blocks arranged in 3 columns. Each block consists of 4 x 4 small squares — 12 small plain and 4 small "crazy" squares, or 1 large square and 12 small plain squares. Each small square measures approximately 4 x 4 inches.

Some of the "crazy" squares and my favourite one. Please, don't ask how I ended up piecing 13 tiny scraps for just one single square...

I finished all large blocks and started piecing them togehter.
