Santa is Coming!

I live in Hungary. In our corner of the world Santa is called St. Nicolaus (Mikulás in Hungarian) and he comes on the night of 5 December and the children get their small gifts the next morning. Kids get sweets in a bag if they were good, and a golden colored birch switch if not.

To honour this day, I made a small wire framed Santa and he brought me some nice threads (and let me hide the ugly pins that keep him upright behind those nice threads).

Recently a friend of mine borrowed me Salley Mavor’s new book Felt Wee Folk: New Adventures. The book contains detailed descriptions of how to make many of her beautiful dolls. I used one of those patterns and modified a bit to look more like Santa. Santa is about 14 cm (~5.5 in) tall including his hat and 10.5 cm (~4 in) without it.

I used chenille stems (pipe cleaners) for the body and wool felt for the coat, hat and beard. The head is a 20 mm wooden bead.

I’m far from the perfection Salley is creating her artwork, but I really enjoyed making this doll. I plan to make some other similar projects in the future. You can enjoy Salley’s creatures at her page.

Mini Memory Quilt Part 1

You might remember that a few weeks ago I made a memory quilt for my doughter (you can take a look at it here: Memory Quilt Part 1, Memory Quilt Part 2, and Memory Quilt Part 3). I had some scraps from that project and decided to create a mini memory quilt that will be a blanket for a doll.

It is very similar to the "big" memory quilt, a set of random pink squares with a few crazy squares here and there. I just had to put those crazy squares in the desing.

Here are some of the scraps I was working with:

The squares of the original quilt were 10 cm by 10 cm (about 4 in x 4 in) but for this mini quilt I felt that I need something smaller so I went for 5 cm by 5 cm (~2 in by 2 in) squares.

After a couple of hours of sewing the quilt top is ready!

Now I just have to quilt it... Since it is not going to be a fluffy comforter, I will be able to use my basig sewing mashine to do some quilting. Will show you the result as soon as I can find some time to finish it.

Knitted coat, hat, and scarf

It's getting colder and colder in our corner of the world so my daughter's doll needs some winter clothes.

I made her a knitted coat in dark red with a pinch of purple, it is a bit of a strange colour combination but I actually like it. The buttons are a bit bigger than it should be, but it is better for my daughter to button up the coat.

I also knitted a small hat and scarf in light pink. Still need to make some boots that goes with this colour scheme. Maybe next weekend?

Frozen Elsa Doll Dress

A few years ago I decided to make a doll for my daughter. I researched all over the internet and came up with a pattern of my own. This is my first 40 cm doll and I learned a lot during the process of making it.

My daughter is still obsessed with Frozen so she got an Elsa dress for herself and then asked me to make a similar dress for her doll. Well… Challenge accepted, here is the result… (I know, Elsa's hair is not braun, but I could't change that.)

Do you recognise the memory quilt I used for the background? :) The shoes are made from felt, and you can use the following pattern to create something similar. Please note, that you should adjust the size of the shoe to fit your doll's feet.
