Memory Quilt from Baby Clothes - Part 5

Design

Most of my squares are ready, I need a few more that I will make on the go, now let's take a look at the design. I will use 9 patch blocks, mixing the plain and crazy squares. The final size of the quilt should be around 220 cm by 140 cm. One square is 10 cm by 10 cm, I work with 0.5 cm seam, so one finished square is 9 cm by 9 cm. Rounding the numbers my quilt is going to have 24 x 15 = 360 squares, that means 216 cm by 135 cm (roughly 85" by 53") plus the border and binding. This means that I have to create 40 pieces of 9 patch blocks. This will take a while...

Here are all my blocks ready to work with. I ordered them by colour to be able to have all colours spread evenly. What do you think?

Memory Quilt from Baby Clothes Part 4

Just a short update on my memory quilt from baby clothes project.

This weekend I sew 50 crazy squares and cut 20 normal ones. So I have a total of 320 squares, almost 50% of them are crazy squares and a few larger rectangles that I will include in the quilt. I think, this should be more or less enough, if not, I still have lots of baby clothes work with.

Now I'm going to start piecing the squares together.

Memory Quilt from Baby Clothes Part 3

This weekend was also working on my memory quilt from baby clothes.

Opened a new box whit my precious baby clothes, here you can see a part of it after stabilised them with clothing interfacing.

After cutting I had about 100 new squares (no crazy ones this time), and a total of 144 squares. Still need to sew a few crazy ones...

Mini Memory Quilt in Red

Finally ready! I feel like it took meg forever to finish this small but it's ready. I can finally play with it. I mean... My daughter can play with it :)

The full quilt is about 32 x 46 cm (about 12.5 in x 18 in), the side of a small rectangle is 4 cm (~1.5 in), almost the same size as my other mini memory quilt. The difference is that for this one I used a slightly smaller binding, I think it looks better like this. The back of the quilt is made of a piece of a white polar blanket. The binding is the same dark red velvet I used for my red memory quilt.

Now my daughter can play with it...

Memory Quilt in Red

Well... The other day my daughter asked me to take out the boxes with her old clothes. These days she was continuously asking about the time she was just a baby so I didn't suspected anything. After a couple of hours she came to me with half a dozen of red onesies, shirts, pants, a pair of old stockings, even a hat, and asked me to make a quilt for her sofa. I was really surprised, but how can I say no for such a kind request... Then she reminded me, that her doll also needs a new quilt. From the same red materials she brought to me. So this weekend I started to make a new memory quilt. This time a memory quilt in red.

Here are all the red fabrics for the quilt and a few of the chain pieced squares. Each square is 10 cm by 10 cm (~4 in x 4 in).

I found 3 appliqués I wanted to use, but they were a bit taller than the other squares so I made a wider row with them.

And the quilt top is ready! It was a very windy day so my DH helped me by holding the quilt. As you can see, there are a few crazy squares that I had to add to the quilt...

Mini Memory Quilt Part 2

After a few hours of piecing and quilting, my mini memory quilt is ready. I used the leftover of my memory quilt but with smaller squares. The first part of this project can be found here: Mini Memory Quilt Part 1.

Using parts of the same duvet as previously, this small quilt became very soft and fluffy. Using my regular sewing machine I sew some straight lines close to the edges so everything stays together, then finished it up by manual quilting some hearts. The quilt is so thick, that I couldn't do the usual rockning motion of the needle, I had to go up and down and up and down... It was very slow. They are just freehand hearts, and I still need to add some.

Rewatched Jenny’s great video tutorial about binding. I used machine binding for the front side then hand binding for the back of the quilt.

My daughter was very happy with this quilt and started playing with it right away. The background is my Memory quilt.

I still have a few small squares left, one day I will use them. But not today. Probably not this year...

Mini Memory Quilt Part 1

You might remember that a few weeks ago I made a memory quilt for my doughter (you can take a look at it here: Memory Quilt Part 1, Memory Quilt Part 2, and Memory Quilt Part 3). I had some scraps from that project and decided to create a mini memory quilt that will be a blanket for a doll.

It is very similar to the "big" memory quilt, a set of random pink squares with a few crazy squares here and there. I just had to put those crazy squares in the desing.

Here are some of the scraps I was working with:

The squares of the original quilt were 10 cm by 10 cm (about 4 in x 4 in) but for this mini quilt I felt that I need something smaller so I went for 5 cm by 5 cm (~2 in by 2 in) squares.

After a couple of hours of sewing the quilt top is ready!

Now I just have to quilt it... Since it is not going to be a fluffy comforter, I will be able to use my basig sewing mashine to do some quilting. Will show you the result as soon as I can find some time to finish it.

Felt and Ribbon Necklaces

Continuing my series from last week (Felt Scraps Necklaces and Felt Scraps Necklace in Pink) this time I would like to show you a necklace made from felt and decorative ribbon.

It is pretty easy to make a necklace like this, just had some fun with the left overs of felt and ribbon lying around my table.

As usually, my daughter joined me and created her own necklace using just a decorative ribbon with butterflies.
